Modular concept

The Emtunga way of construction is based on the stressed skin concept. The fabrication and assembly as such could be described as stacking boxes, side-by-side or on top of each other, which are welded to each other. Our modular stressed skin concept has several advantages:

1 - It is light and strong.
The modules connect to each other and form a strong structure in all dimensions. The concept is based on a stress skin principle, and the corrugated steel walls can resist both in-plane and transverse loading. The completed module frameworks form a rigid self-supporting unit, strong enough to carry lifting forces, support forces and heavy blast loads. Our sophisticated calculation methods enable us to optimise the dimensions of both profiles and plates, thus providing the lightest construction possible based on the load criteria from client and, of course, current regulations.

2 - The fabrication logistics are simplified. With all modules fully outfitted on the workshop floor, lots of time is saved in logistics. All material and equipment is easily lifted inside and installed in each module, and each module is pre-tested and weighed before final assembly.

3 - The method enables us to start up fabrication in any sequence. For example, the top level of a living quarters could be started up long before final design of the bottom level is completed. Finally, our modular concept simplifies transportation across the world; modules can be transported by ordinary ships and trucks and hooked up to large quarters or modules at yards, sites or directly onboard the offshore installation.

The project is executed in four phases:

  • Design phase: Design by all disciplines; Structural, Architectural, HVAC/Piping and EIT.
  • Fabrication phase: All module sections are manufactured at our subcontractors workshops in Sweden.
  • Hook-up phase: All module sections are shipped to the client's site somewhere in the world and are then erected to form a complete Living Quarter or, if the client prefers, it can be erected to form a complete LQ at the port of Varberg and then shipped to the client.
  • MC and Commissioning phase: Final MC and Commissioning is performed prior to load-out, transportation or delivery.
